I'm planning a trip through central ID, pretty much along US 12 the whole way. I've noticed Weir Creek and Jerry Johnson, but are there other good hot springs to check out, relatively near the road? Even in the eastern, more populated half of the state on US 12 would be good.
I'm also curious about road conditions. Anyone been through US 12/Lolo pass recently?

Re: Central Idaho in December
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 3:25 PMHi Paul. There's more geo-powered springs along your route, but they are not roadside and will more than likely require snow shoes.
Be careful at Weir Creek this time of year. The .25 mile trail is steep and slippery, bring a trekking pole or staff if you've got em. If there's snow, stick to the low route, the high route will be much more difficult to traverse. The mile long trail at Jerry is flat and wide, no worries unless there's heavy snow.
In regard to hwy 12 driving, if you can, avoid early and late drives. That road can be bad, especially as you get closer to Lolo Pass (which has a commercial hot springs).
Here's some hwy 12 hot springs resources:
