hello folks. i don't post here (or on tribe for that matter) very often, so greetings to those of you who i have yet to meet.
i have been going to the hotsprings in big bend, on kosk creek, for 12 years. for those of you familiar with the area, i am referencing the ones that are outside the middle of town, and are "wild"...not the pay per use where there is a campground.
these springs are on land that is incredibly sacred to me (and to the local native american tribes) and i have stepped into a role of spiritual guardian for the area. i was deeply disturbed recently at some drastic changes that were made to one of the pools that is furthest up the river, often referred to as "kosk springs". what was once a comfortable, nurturing pool that came up to my neck, is now an awkward, shallow puddle that comes up to my hips. someone, obviously with good intention, filled in the bottom of the pool with rocks and cement. in my experience, and in the experience of friends (some local) who know that land well, these changes have felt like a desecration and have radically altered the energetic expression of the area.
i am wondering if any of you folks know who did this, and if you would be willing to engage in a conversation about it. it was not done by one of the local folks who watches over the place. i would like to be tactful around this, since it seems to have been done with care. however, i am also very aware that these changes do not feel ok, and i would like to put into motion some action to return them to the way they were.
thanks!

Re: disturbing changes at hunt hot springs, big bend CA
Fri, June 23, 2006 - 9:59 PMhello there, I've been going to Hunt hot springs for about 5 years now. The last time I was there was in February or March and I don't believed I soaked in the farther pool this last time, but am disturbed to hear about it being filled in.
I'm wondering how long it's been this way.
I never found that pool the best for soaking because of its lower temperature but it was very nice because of it's size and depth.
Friends of mine who had gone for the first time came back and I now recall them kind of complaining about that pool saying how it was not as big as people had said it was and I just kind of shook it off, but now after reading your post, I can understand.
I have no idea who would do such a thing. Perhaps someone did this in order to create a hotter temperture? hmmmm, Wonder if it worked. People can come up with crazy ideas.
I really find this place sacred and the area and springs hold a very special place with me, I haate to see it disturbed or made a less pleasurable and enjoyable place.
I wish I could give more information on who did this, how it can be fixed, etc. But I can't. I'm just saddened to hear it's been altered for worse and not for better. -

Re: disturbing changes at hunt hot springs, big bend CA
Mon, June 26, 2006 - 2:18 PMI'm calling my friend in Big Bend today, if he's around I'll find out the deal. Many people like to alter pools in general, some to good effect, some are clueless. A few years ago some folks made changes to the main tub, for the better. Surprised the locals have not busted all the cement out.

Mon, June 26, 2006 - 7:43 PMlily, thank you for your thought ful reply, and steven, thank you for posting again...i read what you said in the other hot spring tribe.
lily, as far as i know, the change happened sometime between last fall and now. like you, i don't use the spring in the winter because it's not warm enough, and instead stick to the first little pools by the sand bar. as far as i can tell, someone did it to make it easier to clean...before the drain was higher than the bottom, and now it's flush. it's lovely to hear you find the place sacred too...it makes my heart feel better, and that spot needs all the allies it can get!
thanks again....it feels good just to know other folks have it's best interest at heart too.
