My wife and I are roadtripping most of the month of October and will be hanging out, soaking in as much Puebloan culture as we can take (Chaco, Cedar Mesa, Grand Gulch, etc.) and would like to combine some soaking, of the wet persuasion, into our lives, along the way...
Any must soak sites? We'd backpack a couple of days to get to something worthy~
Thanks in advance...

Sat, August 19, 2006 - 1:31 PMhaven't been to ojo in a while, but a friend said it had gotten a little pricey around there. pick up a copy of the 'colorado hot springs guide' through a bookstore, and it breaks down springs by county and gives particulars and directions for each one. there are a number of springs in that part of the state. enjoy your trip. -

It's been a few years since I was last at Orvis, but there were some restrictions on non-locals 'just showing up'. Call ahead.
If you can stand not being naked in a hot spring, the Yampa Vapor Caves in Glenwood are a fave. Colorado River water seeps down into several underground caverns (hot water & steam). If you can swing the cash, do the caverns 'till you've got a big smile on your face, then get the hour-long massage, and finally deposit yourselves in the solarium and enjoy the totally relaxed glow. -

Mon, August 21, 2006 - 8:30 AMThanks for all the tips,
Keep em' coming~
Our favorite hot spring, locally, is Willett Hot Springs, a 9 mile walk, along the Sespe River, to a always 105 degree tub, a just reward for walking a fair distance. This is a 3 day trip, backpacking and soaking. We'd love to do something similar in the Southwest...

Mon, August 21, 2006 - 1:17 PMwow, orvis. . . i was there many moons ago ~ has it really been almost 10 years?! maybe because it was so long ago, but there was no restriction for non-locals. the owner was absolutely delightful. you could camp out back or stay in a room. there was a herd of sheep grazing in the meadow in back. i thought it was magical! would love to go again ~ daydreaming. . . .

Wed, August 23, 2006 - 4:30 PMI go to Orvis a lot, most recently two weeks ago. There a e no restrictions on non-locals.
Springs are open 'till 10PM, unless you are camping there or staying in a hotel room, in which case you can use the pools all night. It's $10-$12 per person for day use but they have an hour long special for $8. They have a kitchen to cook you own meals, several very warm pools, a very hot "lobster pot," sauna, massage, and beautiful gardens with flowers and grass for lying out on.
Orvis is a short drive from the picturesque mountain town of Ouray, with shops and nice restaurants. There are spectacular bike riding and hiking trails nearby in the mountains.
This time of year there are frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but plenty of sun in between showers.
I highly recommend this place!
