I am heading west from the coast of Massachusettes in two weeks to eventually end up at Harbin Hot springs to stay for a month or two. Does anyone have suggestions for springs to stop at along the way? I ahve never done this before and have no agenda or time frame for the adventure!
Thanks, Shekinah

What info do you already have in hand? Any idea of the route, or do the springs determine that?

      Greetings Bill,
No route in mind except starting on the northern side of the east coast. Just got a National Parks pass. The springs would probably draw me over to them wherever they may be. I have only been to harbin Hot Springs in CA. Looking forward to experiencing different kinds.

if you want to hang out in colorado for a bit, a night or two at valley view is a good thing.

How about the vapor caves in Glenwood (Springs)? Then there's Cottonwood, and Strawberry and ... If you've got the time and like the two-lane, once you hit the Front Range you will never be too far from hot water.

I have both a copy of the Gerst-Young book and "Colorado Hot Springs" in my home (Chicago) library.

Hi Bill. What are Vapor caves?

vapor caves are like a steam bath in a natural cave. after about 20 minutes you've had enough. for my money i'd rather soak in the pool. by the way, this is glenwood springs in colorado we're talking about. a bathing suit is mandatory here.

Thanks Dennis. I already packed a suit knowing that there are many places not so open to the beauty of the body. I think I would love the vapor caves as I love steam rooms!

if you can make a detour to hawaii, theres some amazing steam caves formed from tunnels in the lava there.

you're welcome. my wife and i go to dakota hot springs once or twice a week. it's between pueblo and canon city off of hiway 50, in colorado. not opulent, but a good soak. mostly locals, and a friendly group. and it's clothing optional.

The Vapor Caves are below ground level along the banks of the Colorado River as it flows through Glenwood. True, you need clothes (damn!), but it's an experience you probably would not want to miss.

If you feel flush and want to put on the dog, get an hour massage afterwards, then deposit your body in the solarium 'till you feel the ned to stir. To die for.

Just down the street from the public pool, purported to be the worlds largest hot spring pool. Last time I was there it was early winter, with the snow flying and us enjoying the pool

Hey Dennis ... where's Dakota? I know about DBRC and The Well, but Dakota? Or has there been a name change?

                        Hi,
I just got into the Tribe thing and wanted you to know about my establishment. Mystic Hot Springs is just off I-70 in Utah. It is a laid back spot with some great water. We also have great concerts. Our next show is Nov 7th with Blue Turtle Seduction.
                        See you soon,
                        Mike

                            Trip report as requested Bill!
Hot springs Arkansas had cool Victorian bath houses and I took two gallon jugs of their water for drinking with me on the rest of the trip. Eureka Springs has no free flowing water anymore, all is capped off but the town is wonderful and full of great people.
Got captured by the energy of Sante Fe for two weeks and stayed up on the ranch of a beautiful gay man I met in the hot tubs at Ten thousand Waves. Then I went up to Ojo Caliente where there were only a couple of us in the pools. Stayed in the hotel but in the morning half the pools were empty and they are doing construction on the place and the noise from the machinery was so awful that I had to leave early. Headed up to Pagosa Springs in Colorado but when I was almost at the state line I stopped for a bite at a cafe and overheard people talking about a big storm coming in so I went west instead of getting snowed in for a week. Now in Southern California. Going up to Harbin next weekend. Harbin is still the best in my experience so far. I have noticed a big difference in the places that are clothing optional and those that you have to wear a suit. Of course prefer not!

Sounds like a a trip to remember! Thougt you were going the I-80 way, but it sounds like you made a good choice of route. How cool that you ran into your Santa Fe host! Sim. thing happened to me when I was travelling around the western slope. Stayed a week or more in an old-time ski lodge in Telluride off-season. Helped them out with some stuff thast needed to be done and had a place to crash during the Film Festival. Even sat at the same table as Werner Herzog for breakfast one AM.

I think your choice to turn south b4 Pagosa was a good one. I've spent some time in that area, and good winter storm will nail anything between Wolf Creek Pass and Durango solid for days at at time. OTOH, the springs would have been open, and by time you had a good soak the road to Durang - and more springs - would have been open. <G>

I keep hearing about Harbin. It, and Breintenbush, are on my list.

And yes, I agree, nudie is tha only way to go!

                              Bill

Hi Mike! I am heading out from California tomorrow on my way to Utah. Visiting with a friend in Salt Lake but giving myself a few days down south in the parks. Where is your Hot Spring at ? Are there accomodations there?
                          Thanks,

I had a great stay in a cabin at Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe Utah. It is rustic but the waters are great and the owner Mike is doing really cool things there with music and tv. THen I went to Saratoga Hot Springs in Wyoming and it is a public pool that is free. Met nice people and stayed in a local motel. The drive back through the mountains to Laramie and I-80 was gorgeous and silent. No snow this year to speak of anywhere.
