Does anyone know about the status of Matilija Hots Springs in Ojai?

There is a developed hot springs on the land owned by a new-age shamanism group (last I heard) that used to open the space for yoga retreats. It is in a valley that was once sacred Chumash Indians land. I loved going there, but then they stopped having retreats. Not sure why.

I have heard that there is natural springs near there that you can hike to, but I have never gotten the details.

Can someone help out?

There are two small pools down the road embankment on Matilija road. One pool is good for about 4 max, and the other 2, if you know each other. The temperature also varies.
I belive a few of the houses have small pools in thier backyards.
Wheeler Gourge has been closed for years, but has had alot things going on recently... grass being cut, things painted, etc.. Not sure what is happening there.
The kine springs are a 7 mile hike, Wilits and Sespie. Never did make it out there, found myself on an island instead. Peace

Willet Hot Springs is a 7-8 mile walk from the end of the road just past the road down to Middle Lion Campground. The Trail is a bit tricky if you've never been, as an amazing amount of water has been flowing through The Sespe and every creek along the way deposits a bit more and it's a bit magical, as the whole area is amazingly green, in different hues. The hot springs itself is pretty wonderful and my favorite hot springs that you can backpack to. Dayhiking is pretty much out of the question, as the creek and river crossings will keep you plenty busy and you'll want to spend a few hours or more soaking in the 105 degree tub, dontchathink?

Matillija has been sold by the new age church that owned it. The big question for the property is what will happen when they remove the dam just a few hundred yards upstream (the Feds have promised to do this soon). The hot springs could be inundated with tons of silt and mud.

I went to 2 yoga retreats there in 2001 and 2002 and they were wonderful, but alas I think it will require someone with vision (and aa lot of capital) to resurrect it once again.

      Mark, thanks for the info...

Very sad. That place was magical.

Which yoga retreats did go on?

I was there once with the LA yoga teacher Shiva Rae, three times with Micheline Berry, and once with Ira Rosen & Abby Wills.
      Each time was wonderful...

Have you found any other yoga + hot springs retreats that are comparable?

Hmm, we must've run into one another, because I was on 2 of Micheline's retreats at Matillija!

        Unfortunately, I haven't found a comparable hot springs-yoga retreat.

but one can access it. Ojai tribe visit it often and you should have no promblem getting to it. I have not heard of a church buying it??????

I wonder if this is the same hot spring area that I've heard about that you access behind a small religiouis college or university? I had some notes about how to get there, but can't remember. All i do remember is that the directions said to park at some parking site and then across the road is the entry to a college and the hot springs were behind the college.

          Am I mistaken?

Yes the one you speak of is called the Punch Bowls and yes it is
near a small college in upper ojai but mistaken with Matilija which is
off the 150 toward Rose Valley.

I just went to Matilija hot springs last night. The water was pretty stinky, but very warm. The punch bowls is a cold water creek, they have rocks you can slide down

This is not the Matilija hot springs. That was is the one under the Dam of the lake. Yes this one is very private and I never hreard a name for it and have been coming there with the both owners permission for over 20 years. Cool people are welcome but beware that the cops do come by and I have seen people handcuffed for drugs, and other problems. Stop telling everyone where it is. You will just get it shut down like it was a few years ago for over 2 years. This is a very special place to us and we will do what ever it takes to keep it that way. Respect it.

I’m excited to share that I have been given the honor to steward the Matilija Sanctuary in Ojai,CA. I will be in residence there as well as managing the property and retreat rentals. It’s 9 acres of secluded private land, tucked in a canyon on the Matilija River just north of Ojai, with year round natural hot and cold springs and accommodations for 40+ guests. In modern times, it is a historical landmark originally built in the late 1800's. It is just below Matilija Dam. It is uncertain, though there is a strong lobby, whether the dam will be coming down and threatening the existence of the structures. If the funding does come through for dam removal, the process will probably not begin for several years.

I have been in conversations with the new owners for several months developing our vision and intention for the land and resources there. We want to invite workshop and seminar facilitators to come and utilize the space for education, training and community. For many years it has been a hub of new thought, spiritual exploration, permaculture, and healing. We will be continuing this legacy and plan to have it available by June.

Though a private residence, and not available for unscheduled public use, we do want to continue allowing for vacation rentals and retreats, as the previous stewards had. If you want to inquire about vacation rentals or visit the property, please contact me.

It’s a nourishing, potent, inspirational location where I will have the opportunity to host and nurture our visitors, share the healing power of nature, provide live music for our guests and offer private coaching sessions upon request.
