Hi All,
As many SF Bay area natural hot springs enthusiasts
are painfully aware, there's not much out there within an hour or two, particulary from the South Bay. The best is probably Sykes, which requires a 2-3 hour drive and full day hike in and back - or maybe Crabtree, which was over 4 hours from the South Bay and
(as discussed in a recent thread) not all that hot and at least partially on private property and off limits
Often forgotten is Gilroy Hot Springs, until recently privately owned, but donated/sold first to the Nature Conservancy which then tranferred it to become part of Henry Coe State Park to which it is adjacent. As far as I know, until some plan is established and funds availlable, the property is likely to remained closed and off limits due to liability issues, etc.
Perhaps someone on this list more connected to the effort can provide some update on any progress -but thats where things stood in late fall. I can summarize my understanding of what happened prior to then. The former owner was a Japanese gentlemen who wanted to reopen the property as a Japanese style
Onsen and perhaps renovate the rather run down baths and buildings. However, apparently there were permit, zoning, and environmental considerations which stood in the way, and recovery of the required investment unlikely. Now aspart of the Park system
redevelopment (as a resort) is even less likely, and despite its status as a California Historic Landmark, etc. (there are signs directing you to the long closed facility all along 101) there may be substantial delays before anything is decided beyond the demolition of some of the more hazardous old cabins still standing from
early resort era.
I visited Gilroy Hot Springs on multiple ocassions before the property was closed (while it was still in possession of the previous
owners). There were multiple outdoor soaking tubs as well as two
indoor tubs (separate sexes) together with changing/resting and picnicing facilities. Probably for liability reasons the large deep
outside pool was filled in, the buildings locked, etc., but hot somewhat slightly sulfur laden water continues to emanate from the source (or one of the sources) and flows down the hill.
It's possible to drive to within about 1 mile of the springs and then walk up past the gate and up the hill after the bridge on Gilroy
Hot Springs Road. Technically this may be tresspassing, albeit on
public land already annexed into the park system. My proposal
is that we set up a time - say some Saturday in March after the weather improves - and arrange to have a meeting of what could become a "Friends of Gilroy Hot Springs" committee
focused on steering the powers that be to preserve this resource for future enjoyment. I'm thinking of something along the lines of the Friends of Bagby Hot Springs group in the Portland area, or other less formal groups which organize to
periodically clean-up, maintain, preserve and enjoy hot spring resources.
I propose a first meeting of all those interested at the springs to allow everyone to explore and discuss the possibilities and determine if there might be enough consensus and interest to draft
a recommendation letter, proposal, or plan additonal meetings. Maybe if someone has one of those portable/inflatable hot tub deals they might bring it along so we can "test the waters" on a temporary (albeit somewhat unnatural) basis. I suppose an inflatable swimming pool, generator (or battery) and pump
might also work. If this is of interest to anyone please respond - I'll throw out Saturday, March 12 at 1:00 PM as a proposed time to meet there at the gate.
Cheers, Tim

This weekend is one of the last Coastal Hot Springs events for the springs in West Marin. After this weekend there will be far fewer opportunities to soak in this magnificent springs until the Winter (and then the storms make things more problematic).

Background: There is a hot springs on the West Marin coast that is almost always underwater, and only emerges from the ocean when the tides are extremely low. During extreme low tides it is one of the most beautiful springs in the hemisphere. There is a small community of folks who meet at these springs, which are located near Steep Ravine Environmental campground, about 1/4 mi. south of Red Rock Beach, which is a couple of miles south of Stinson Beach.

This happens to be one of the times when it will appear for a few hours on Fri., Sat., and Sunday. It will also occur a few more times this summer, though it will mostly 'go away' soon, and then there will be more opportunities (weather permitting) in the Winter.

We are planning on going to the three hot spring sessions this weekend. The next one starts at around 4:00 AM and will end around 8:30 AM on Friday, August 1. There will be two more similar sessions on Sat. & Sun. mornings, and then there will be no springs for weeks (and then only very short periods in the middle of the night), and very few 'deep' low tides (and corresponding long hot springs) until October.

It was bad people, vibe and some shit has been going on there. When we went last in December..... some one got beat up.... the cops were called, also my girlfriend got grouped by some guy and another time Alan and I were camping at the top and we heard glass break ...... yelling and come to find out someone care was brooke into for a 3rd time in two weeks. The weekends are the worst.... and here we were on a week day.... yikes! Also someone drunk took a shit in one off the pools. Also it is not a place you want to sit in the tub as a woman all alone. You might get raped. There is allot of gang activity going on concerning drugs. And the parting at night is crazy.... most of the time you get a very unwelcome vibe from the night time crowd. It is so sad to see this change. I would not be surprised if the forest service does not come and destroy the tubs soon like they did miracle.
If you or your friends take the chance and go..... be warned and armed ....... it is a luck of the draw to meet cool people there anymore and if you do...... they are soon to leave when the locals get there. This is what happen when the tubs are easy to get too. i would go else where. I would just take the extra 4 hours to get to Saline or the east side from the same way you would get to remington. On the way....take a hike down see the tubs and be on your way to a better place. SO VERY SAD!
ALSO THE LAST TIME WE WENT THERE WAS BLOOD ALL OVER AROUND THE TUBS FROM THE GUY WHO GO BEAT UP. TIMES ARE CHANGING AND PEOPLE ARE CHANGING. BE SAFE AND AWARE. KNOW YOUR CARE IS NOT SAFE LEFT AT THE TOP ANYMORE AND NEITHER ARE YOU LET ALONE THE TUBS. PLEASE LOOK AT THIS!

Can anyone give me the run down of hot springs in the southern california area? My boyfriend and I are wanting to go to one on Saturday for a day trip. We'd like to travel no more then a few hours and find somewhere magical and not too crowded. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Howdy folks,

I'm thinking of taking a motorcycle trip from SF up into more northern CA and possibly into northern NV. Can anyone suggest some hot springs or hot spring spas ( on the order of Orr, Harbin etc ) that one may want to check out? I'd like to be camping during the trip, but as it's still Spring, I doubt I'll be able to pack the gear to camp at mid to high elevations. I assume I'll be able to cross the Sierra on a motorcycle at this time of year, during the day at least.

I don't mind hiking to get to the springs, but as I'll be coming off the road I'll have limited options for footwear and will most likely be wearing a riding suit. As such I'll probably keep off-roading to a moderate amount. That said, recommendations for future adventures are more than welcome. I don't mind having to keep clothes on, though it's always nicer to be free. I'm not clear on budget so I'll entertain all price ranges with respect to the spa locations.

It may be too cold for some places, but.... if you've got recommendos, thank you in advance.

I'm sure many people are aware of the problems at this hot spring but I thought I would share my story from this Saturday (3/29/08). A friend and I were at Terwilliger (recently the keyosk at the trailhead was burned down), and heard there was a cop with a dog in the parking lot. We figured it was because of the keyosk but it turns out they were there to examine the cars and search them if the dog smelled anything. We were warned about this on our walk down by someone who was searched but nothing was found.

As soon as I reached the parking lot the cops new my name what car was mine and were going to search it no matter what. I was able to get them not to search it by giving away a tin with herb and my pipe. I ended up getting a $525 dollar ticket and they let me go on my way. And they were still waiting for one car that had a "hit" by the dog. All in all it was a lot better than what could have happened if they searched the car. They told me that it is common practice to bring a drug dog to that parking lot and smell the cars. The cops also said they don't care about small amounts (less than pound) and that is why I only got a ticket. If this is true then I question there reasoning for coming to that parking lot because they would only catch users there.

I wanted to warn all out there to be careful at this particular hot spring. I'm sure many people know about the vandelism probablems but federal police targeting herb users is new to me. I would never leave anything in the car because they never even tried to search my person. Good luck to all that visit this spring because I don't think I'll be returning for a long time.

Hello fellow soakers and enthusiasts of natural hot springs. I am a Northern California resident going on ten years, and have in that time enjoyed many of the springs of the Eastern Sierra, route 395, Deep Creek and Trego near the Black Rock Playa, as well as established spots like Harbin and Orr. I am planning a trip to Las Vegas at the end of January. I'll be driving down from San Francisco, which I've made in about Eight and a half hours straight through, however this time around I am planning on exploring Sequoia national park along the way and perhaps spending a night in that general area. I am also hoping to take in some hot springs, ideally locations I have not been too before. Miracle and Remington seem like good possibilities, being a relatively short side trip from Bakersfield. I'm thinking of checking one of these spots out on the second morning before hitting the road and hopefully arriving in Vegas by mid afternoon. I would like to know what the weather and road conditions are like for the springs and the surrounding area typically in late January. I've read that Miracle may have been shut down, or some of the pools disassembled - anyone aware of the current situation?

If I have time, I am also aware of a few sites near Vegas and the Hoover Dam, but I have heard varying reports on their accessibility. Some are supposed to require a boat to reach, or difficult, skill intensive hikes. Are any of these reasonable for a quick day trip - hike of several hours coming from near the strip? Again, taking into consideration that I'll be making the trip in late January.

Thanks and regards

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.
I'm new to this tribe. Happy to find fellow soakers. Last year after the burn my hubby and I went to Valley View Hot Springs in So. Colorado. It was awesome! A sacred place. There were both developed and undeveloped springs and pools, and a wonderful sauna. Everything was clothing optional. There are rooms to rent, and camping.
While we were there last year we heard about 2 other hot springs in the same general area: Buena Vista, and Princeston. I was wondering if anyone in this tribe could give me some info I couldn't find on their websites. Are either of them clothing optional? Is there camping for a 40 foot bus? I'd appreciate any info you may have about these two hot springs.

For those who have heard of the Marine County Tidal Hot Springs, but have never been: Yes they are real. I just went this morning and they're in fantastic shape! Unfortunately they will become rarer soon, so if you may want to visit them soon (like the next few days).

The springs are most easily reached by 'goat' trail near Steep Ravine Environmental Campground, located about 1/4 mi. south of Red Rock Beach, which is about 2.5 mi. south of Stinson Beach. Most of the time (i.e. >99%) the springs are covered by the Pacific Ocean, and they only happen during extreme low tides (i.e. when the tides are less than '0' foot mean-tide). These extreme low tides occur only during certain days (normally around New Moon and Full Moon). Summer and Winter have more extreme tides than Fall and Spring, and the Winter Storms often swamp the springs with high waves, no matter how low the tides get. Therefore Summer is the best Soaking Season.

Sadly, the 2007 Summer Soaking Season is almost over, and opportunities are getting rarer.

The good news is that we're in the middle of one of the last extreme-tide 'cycles' of the season. So the next Hot Springs will occur very early tomorrow (Sunday) morning, starting at ~4:15 AM (when the tide falls to '0' feet). The tide will then continue to fall to 0.9 ft. at 5:56 AM, and the springs will keep getting hotter. It will remain hot until the rising tide brings the waves, which will probably occur shortly before 9:00 AM (when the tide rises to almost 1 ft. above '0' mean tide).

The next day (Monday) everything will occur about 50 minutes later. The next day the it wil happen again, but not as much. By the end of the week the 'cycle' will be over. There are a few low tides in August, though they won't be as deep as tomorrow or Monday.

If this interests you feel free t reply and I'll send directions. Realistically, it's probably not a good idea for you to try to hike down the (very steep) trail to the springs in the pre-dawn dark unless you're hiking with someone experienced. Once you've been shown the way, there's no problem. Nevertheless, it's best to follow someone else the first time. Also: Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and/or socks (there's poison oak on the path -- no need to spoil you experience by getting stung :-)

We'll be going tomorrow (Sunday) morning, so if any of you want to ride with us or caravan in your own vehicle, just email and we can make arrangements.

Hope you find this info useful.

Happy Soaking!

I got a hotsprings book, yay! But I want the hush hush hotsprings that only locals know about. There was one in Lake County, CA I frequented made seasonally with sandbags on the side of a rock face in a river... Ummm! Had to drive WAAAAAaaaay out then hike. My kind of place. So I hear it is now closed off and never developed, new owners who don't use it but are scared of liability. Geez.
I'm in the Pacific Northwest and subscribe to "leave-no-trace"... If anyone is willing to share with me the location of their favorite spots that aren't in the book-- meeting this description, ideally one that must be back packed to... sigh... I'd be eternally grateful and thrilled!

I only have one extra day to play with but I'd like to visit a spring in Cali. I'm familiar with most of the Oregon hot springs but about California I'm clueless. My current plan is to drive on the east side of the Sierra's and stop at Travertine hot springs. They sound nice and the access is easy. However, since it's so easy to learn about them....I don't need complete solitude for my soak but I don't want to go some place that's too busy. Am I on the right track? Any suggestions? I don't mind hiking but I drive a VW Golf so the roads need to be reasonably good.

Hello everyone,

I'm hiking the PCT next year, so if you know of any hot springs within walking/hitching distance, I'd love to hear about them this is what I have so far..

California
Warner Springs (Private) In 1795, a Spanish expedition led by Fray Juan Mariner visited an incredibly beautiful valley that reposed against the San Jacinto Mountains in what is now Southern California. Besides the majestic grandeur, the adventurers were struck by a remarkable phenomenon, the gushing forth of "Aqua Caliente," the hot mineral waters that would later bring thousands of visitors from all over the world to this enchanted place. Warner Springs offers deluxe accommodations and has a tremendous hiker discount. Warner Springs Ranch 31652 Highway 79 P.O. Box 10 Warner Springs, CA 92086 (760) 782-4200 http://www.warnersprings.com

Deep Creek Hot Springs, San Bernadino, California located directly on the PCT, north of Big Bear City, California These natural hot springs are located in the San Bernardino National Forest. The pools were built by volunteers over a period of years and are largely maintained by volunteers in the pristine state you see them in today. The beautiful and unique landscape, the soothing hot spring waters mixing with the cool mountain stream, local custom and tradition make for a wonderful clothing-optional setting to be enjoyed by all. Since the time Native Americans inhabited the area, people from all over the world have come to the Springs to get away, soak, sunbathe, relax, and enjoy the natural environment all year long.

Mono Hot Springs (private resort), Mono Hot Springs, California N 37.327 W 119.018 109°F / 43°C
Approximately 7 miles hitchhiking off trail. With hot mineral baths, massage, rustic cabins (reasonably priced), and good food, you'll decompress in no time. And nobody can beat Mono Hot Springs for location. Hiking into the John Muir Wilderness from here is extraordinary. (559) 325-1710 From Yosemite National Park: Take SR 41 south. Between Fish Camp and Oakhurst, turn left on Road 222 to Bass Lake and North Fork. As you approach Bass lake, Road 222 veers to the right to Bass Lake, so stay on the main road which changes its name to Road 274 and heads to North Fork. Right turn at stop/yield sign in North Fork, cross the creek, go left through North Fork till you see the left turn sign for Road 222 to Auberry. (When we checked July 3, the sign was missing. So from the yield sign mentioned above, go one mile and you’ll arrive at the left turn pocket to Road 222.) You’ll drop down in elevation and cross the San Joaquin River. Then you go up, up, up. At the stop sign, head on through and past Auberry to stop sign at SR 168, turn left and follow signs to Huntington Lake.
Muir Trail Ranch (Private/Public) Over a thousand gallons per hour of fresh, hot water gushes out of a crack in the bedrock, flows along a tempering streambed, then pours into a large pool that is surrounded by flowers and a beautiful enclosure. When you slip slowly into its hot embrace, any aches or pains slowly vanish. This is no backyard hot tub. First, it’s bigger, about 8 by 10 feet (about 2.5 by 3 meters) and 2.5 feet (0,75m) deep. Second, it’s fresh since there is enough flow to change the water 16 times a day. And finally, it’s in a setting you won’t find in many back yards – the view out the south side is of a granite peak that rises majestically over our meadow Near the pool is a place to wash up before entering the pool. We supply the soap and shampoo. The water temperature is around 107°F (42°C).If that’s a little too hot for you, there is another bath only a few feet away that we call the cool bath. It is enclosed, too, and has cooler water coming in from a spring up the hill nearby to fill the pool with water a little hotter than body temperature. We have provided a wash-off area in this pool also. This is the kids’ favorite pool. During the off-season, October through May, our address is: Muir Trail Ranch P.O. Box 700 Ahwahnee, CA 93601 Our phone number is (209) 966-3195 http://www.muirtrailranch.com/hot-springs.html
Sierra Hot Springs (private) Sierraville, California For almost 150 years, this land has hosted popular hot springs resorts. The spring water here is as smooth as silk and the pools are a true experience. Within the last several years, two of the springs have been beautifully redeveloped. The Temple Dome Area is the main pool area and consists of The Hot Pool which is enclosed in a large geodesic dome, featuring stained glass and skylights. Complimented by two cold plunges this pool is also sand bottomed, with mosaic tile sides. Outside the dome, the warm Swimming Pool is complimented by a large sundeck. There is also a dry sauna at the Temple Dome Pool area. The Meditation Pool is outdoors, surrounded by rock tile. In this faux natural pool, you step down rock steps into a sand bottomed delight. This seasonal hot pool is ideal for enjoying the star studded skies The Phoenix Baths are seasonal pools inside private rooms, and the warm spring water is drained and refilled between users. The Phoenix Baths also house our newly remodeled spa area. From I-80 take exit 188B in Truckee, go North on Hwy 89 approximately 30 minutes to Sierraville. The Globe Hotel is at the intersection of Hwys 89 and 49. To reach the Main Lodge and the Springs, turn right onto Hwy 49, then turn right on Lemon Canyon Road.
Iva Bell aka “Fish Creek” Black-eyed Susans, columbine, and wild orchids seem to dance above the lush grass surrounding Fish Creek Hot Springs, also called Iva Bell. If you're a hiker who likes to skinny-dip and you wouldn't mind a 13-mile walk from Red's Meadow Campground, near Devil's Postpile, then this is the spot for you. Iva Bell features six 100- to 110-degree soaking pools located next to or near campsites. Once there, at an elevation of 7,200 feet, you'll also have a great meadow-top view of Fish Creek Valley and the mountains of the eastern Sierra. From the trailhead at the end of the road at Red's, the hike is five miles to Cold Creek, then another seven miles to the Iva Bell camp area, where the pools are located.
BLANEY HOT SPRINGS, MARIPOSA, California 37.234 118.881 109°F / 43°C A hot springs that doubles as a mud bath? That's just one of Blaney Hot Springs' many surprises. Another is its location: the little spring is in a meadow near the John Muir Trail, right in the middle of the Sierra. Some hikers use it as a mud bath, which can be a relaxing treat after backpacking. The site, also accessible by horseback or four-wheel-drive vehicle, is near the town of Lakeshore, some 10 miles southeast of Florence Lake. How to find it: Getting to the springs requires a 11-mile hike from the end of the road at Florence Lake and across the south fork of the San Joaquin River. Want to spend more of your time in the springs instead of on the trail? In summer, the walk is just 5 miles on the Florence Lake Trail if you take the Sierra Queen across the lake.
Hot Creek Mamoth Lakes, California 37.656 118.834 171° F 77° C USGS QUAD (MT. MORRISON 15)
Hot Creek is located 25 miles south of Lake Mono, near Mammoth Lakes. Hot Creek was a party hot spot during the sixties though these days it is more family-oriented. The Creek is maintained by the National Park Service, and has a more official air to it as can be seen by the numerous warnings to avoid the scalding water along the hillside. The waters are very unique as the hot water bubbles up from the bottom of the creek, where the waters are heated by magma three miles below the surface. This hot water mixes with the cold creek water. If you stand in one place for a few minutes you can feel the hot water mixing with the cold, resulting in a perfect temperature depending on where you are standing. Just be sure not to go near the restricted areas as the water is scalding in those places. Hot Creek has two bathing areas. The first bathing area is at the bottom of the trail that leads down from the parking lot. This trail continues onto the second bathing area, that is less popular but every bit as good as the first area. Hot Creek is very popular, and many international visitors come to bathe. Located two miles south of the Mammoth Lakes turnoff from route 395, turn left onto Hot Creek Airport Road and follow the signs for about three miles. http://thesierraweb.com/generalinfo/hotcreekfaq.html
Buckeye Hot Spring Bridgeport, California 38.237 N 119.326 W 140 degrees F USGS map: Matterhorn Peak (15 min) Buckeye Hot Spring lies within Toiyabe National Forest, just north of Bridgeport. It is a little harder to get to than Travertine, and doesn't have a grand view of the Sierras as its backdrop. What it does have is the sound of the adjacent babbling brook, which are very soothing to the senses and frayed nerves. The hot mineral water cascades over a cave in a mini-waterfall formation. Troglodytes will enjoy the seclusion of soaking in the exposed cave, while others are content to admire the stream. Buckeye is clothing-optional though the majority of soakers are families with swimsuits. Another draw to Buckeye is the nearby campground, for those who want to be next to the springs 24 hours a day.At the northern end of Bridgeport, turn off of route 395, turn west on Twin Lakes Road and travel seven miles. Turn right just past Doc and Al's Resort, then cross the bridge going over the creek. Continue uphill along a gravel road, past Buckeye Campground. At the top of the hill there is a parking area. The springs are down the trail from the parking lot towards the creek. http://www.soak.net/f-buckeye.html

The naturally hot water is scalding at its source, but flows down rock formations till it reaches the pools below at a comfortable 103 degrees. All types of people visit Travertine, including the nearby park rangers, campers, families, couples, and single travelers. Limited camping space is available on the short dirt road leading to the springs, but is not allowed in the immediate area of the pools. Take route 395 south of Bridgeport for half a mile. Turn left at Jack Sawyer Road, just before the Ranger Station. Once everything is settled, you can lie back in your private tub and enjoy one of the loveliest spots in Oregon. Warning: If a number of others are filling the tubs at the same time, it may take a bit of time to fill your tub. GPS: 43.708N 122.288W Located at about 2,000-foot altitude, just a few steps from Highway 58 in the Willamette National Forest, the springs are open year-around. It has a large parking lot and riverside picnic tables, with a Forest Service campground less than a mile away. There was talk several years ago of expanding the hot springs into a rustic resort which would take advantage of the hot springs and nearby Salt Creek. However, nothing ever developed and the hot springs remains natural and woodsy. The shallow pools, lined with rock and sand, are just right for a morning or afternoon soak anytime of year. Located at about 2,000-foot altitude, in the Willamette National Forest, the springs are open year-around.

The trail starts on the north side of FR #26, opposite Sulphur Creek C.G.. The trail starts at a shiny, new trail sign on the north side of the road opposite the campground and gains a few hundred feet to the Wilderness boundary at 0.5 miles. From here it drops and reaches the creek at mp 0.8 near the site of the hot springs which are on the opposite side of the stream. Frequently you can smell the rotten egg odor of the hot springs, but they can be hard to find. During the spring melt runoff, it is not safe to wade the creek here. The unmaintained trail continues, but is blocked by many large fallen trees and crosses several washouts until it eventually peters out at approximately mp 2. One section of the trail offers a nice view of cascades in the creek where it forms an island. Directions: Drive Highway 530 north from Darrington or south from Highway 20 near Rockport. Turn east on FR #26. Drive Suiattle River Road FR #26 22 miles to the Sulphur Creek Campground and park off the road, but not in the campground. http://www.wta.org/~wta/cgi-bin/wtaweb.pl?3+tg+fetch+english+1110

The best I've seen so far. Right on the Pacific, you can feel the rocks shuddering under the violence of the surf as you lay in your perfect peaceful pool gazing up at the moonlit steaming waterfall. Go in the winter at low tide, I've heard the springs are overrun by tourists in the summer (dozens lined up to get in), and high tide covers the most comfortable pools. I went on January 3 this year, camped over a night and had the entire place to myself from around 6pm til 8am.
From Tofino on Vancouver Island, catch a boat or plane to the cove. I paid $40 for the 2-hour boat ride there and we saw orcas, three adults and a baby, on the way! I flew back to Tofino from the Cove in a little float-plane, which cost $60 for the 15-minute flight and extraordinary view. You can do a daytrip, though you'll be kicking yourself for agreeing to leave so soon. Better to camp, but bring supplies for an extra day or two as transportation in and out of the cove becomes impossible in bad weather. There's a campground open in the summer near the dock, but in the winter when no one's around you can get away with putting up your tent in the trees right by the springs. I found a little clearing within 50 feet of the sea on three sides! There's also a Bed & Breakfast Boat called the Innchanter at the dock that you can lodge at. From the dock, there's a two-kilometer boardwalk through old-growth forest to the actual springs. (That's just over a mile.) There is a little changing hut at the springs.
The water is very hot above the waterfall. I could hardly stand to be in it. Below the waterfall the temperature is perfect. The air temperature was below freezing when I was there but I was quite content for hours in my pool wearing nothing but a toque. (Beanie, for you Americans...)
There's a sign up that bathing suits are required, which makes sense when dozens of tourists are squeezing in cheek to jowl. Better bring a suit for daytime soaking.

Hi all:

I'm looking for a midweek, weeklong getaway in early March. I can go either Northern or Southern California, and I'm considering several hot springs in the area, among them Orr, Harbin, Wilbur, Sierra, and the matilija sanctuary.

My primary concern is quiet and comfort. I'll need some space to work on a project (lots of reading and writing) so I'd like a place that has some solitude and privacy, at least for a large chunk of the day. Some socialization at night might be nice. Clothing optional and good hot springs are a must. I'd say I prefer a private-ish room and not a dorm, since I'll need to have some room to spread out (a room, or a nook with a desk would be perfect).

Can anyone recommend a place that might fit me? I keep hearing good and bad about Harbin, and Orr's "no soap" policy (at least the one I've seen online) might be a tad more rustic than I'd like.

Thanks!

i remember that we had to go through a town called hesperia, and had to head east (?) off the freeway, and jog over off the main street, and park on private land and hike in. any more direction than that? i'd love to go there again....

Bring some aluminium foil to cook your fish in the steam barbie. I've been told that the folks in town will sometimes let you use the ones at their motels/resorts for free if you ask nicely.

Taupo: Head out of town on spa road, taking a left when you come to the skatepark. you've gone too far if you get to AC Baths. Park your car (leave nothing valuable) and walk 10min down the path to the first bridge--the pools are in the stream underneath

Kerosene Creek: Take the state highway north from Taupo towards Rotorua. About 40min out of town, you'll see a sign for Kerosene Creek road on your right. Follow the signs to the parking lot, then walk to the waterfall.

There are two in Hawke's Bay:
Tikokino Hut: 4WD across the stream, then walk to the start of the track. There is a warm spring here, but the nicer ones are 1.5hrs up the path to the hut, then another 20min further up hill. Make a night of it.
Ask in the Napier outdoor stores for info on the other--I've never been because of the long hike in.

I've started a tribe for Alaskan Naturists. I've been involved with organized naturism / nudism since the mid-1990s. I was a member of a great club in central California called the Natural Manner Club, which I was able to participate in when I visited California. The Natural Manner Club held one or two events a month, almost always at the home of a member. Folks who had swimming pools (with high fences in their back yards) hosted swimming parties, people with large-screen televisions hosted super bowl / world cup events, and various holidays became general clothing-mostly-optional theme parties (St. Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, Halloween, Christmas, etc.). Some people organized day hikes in secluded areas of federal land (there are no federal laws against nudity, as long as it's not "lewd"). One club member was a guide at a cave and once a year he led a clothing-optional (shoes recommended) hike of the caverns.

Living in Anchorage, I'd enjoy finding others who would like to socialize in a clothing-free atmosphere, at least now and then. Looking forward to meeting more like-minded friends. Come join me if you'd like to learn more.
I'll be taking a didjeridu road trip from Oregon to an hour south of Yosemite in a few weeks. There's a gathering in North Fork and I'm planning on spending about a week in the area with a friend. We might head into Yosemite, but we're also considering heading to the Bishop area or wherever we can find good hotsprings with few people. We'll be car camping and quite flexible with plans.

hello folks. i don't post here (or on tribe for that matter) very often, so greetings to those of you who i have yet to meet.

i have been going to the hotsprings in big bend, on kosk creek, for 12 years. for those of you familiar with the area, i am referencing the ones that are outside the middle of town, and are "wild"...not the pay per use where there is a campground.

these springs are on land that is incredibly sacred to me (and to the local native american tribes) and i have stepped into a role of spiritual guardian for the area. i was deeply disturbed recently at some drastic changes that were made to one of the pools that is furthest up the river, often referred to as "kosk springs". what was once a comfortable, nurturing pool that came up to my neck, is now an awkward, shallow puddle that comes up to my hips. someone, obviously with good intention, filled in the bottom of the pool with rocks and cement. in my experience, and in the experience of friends (some local) who know that land well, these changes have felt like a desecration and have radically altered the energetic expression of the area.

i am wondering if any of you folks know who did this, and if you would be willing to engage in a conversation about it. it was not done by one of the local folks who watches over the place. i would like to be tactful around this, since it seems to have been done with care. however, i am also very aware that these changes do not feel ok, and i would like to put into motion some action to return them to the way they were.

thanks!

*************************************
ABOUT SUNOL REGIONAL WILDERNESS
*************************************
This place is amazing!!! Once you experience it, you will know why this place got it’s nick name “Little Yosemite” I’ve hiked all over the bay area and many parts of the world. This place is my favorite, although Teman Negara in Malaysia was an unusual spot filled with a symphony of sounds day and night.

I hiked here Thursday morning and the hills are ablaze in purple, orange and yellow flowers, the air smells fantastic, the waterfalls are flowing hard! There are two options for our hike, one is a level easy paved road and for the more adventurous like me, we will hike along creeks, pastures and reach a mountain peak at around 1500 feet. From there we can see our friends below who chose the easy hike. From there we will follow the creek back… I plan on rock hopping down the creek, so bring good shoes if you want to join me!!!

We are lucky that Kelly, the park superintendent, reserved this spot in his name. He is hot, a burner and will be hanging out with us too!!! This is a great time to have real conversations around the campfire under the stars and enjoy more intimate camping (like RWB used to be).

*************************************
TO REACH THE PARK
*************************************
From the Fremont area, drive north on I-680 and exit at Calaveras Road. Turn right on Calaveras and proceed to Geary Road, which leads directly into the park.

From the Oakland / Berkeley area, drive east on I-580 to the junction with I-680 in Pleasanton. At the junction, go south on I-680 and exit at Calaveras Road/Highway 84 just south of the town of Pleasanton. Turn left onto Calaveras Road and proceed to Geary Road, which leads directly into the park.

From the Walnut Creek / Danville area, go south on I-680 and exit at Calaveras Road/Highway 84 just south of the town of Pleasanton. Turn left onto Calaveras Road and proceed to Geary Road, which leads directly into the park.
